Upgrading your Peek — A Primer

Here is an overview on upgrading your Peek. It’s pretty easy!

Easy. If you have a Peek, you want to be sure it is on the latest released version. Right now — that is Peek 9, also known as version 1.50.00. More about it here.

Hard. If you are advanced or adventurous, you may want to try an even later test version before it is released for everyone. More about it here.

Peek 9 vs. the older generation

You should read this.

In early October we retired the older generation of Peeks in the US — Peek Classic, Peek Pronto, virtually every Peek device purchased before the Peek 9 release.

Unfortunately, their network connection died and we cannot revive it over the air.

We have offered every single Peek user and customer in the US a replacement Peek 9.

If you have one of these old Peeks, you can in fact revive it through some technical and nerdy steps. We’ll post more about these in a little while. Hang onto that Peek.

But in general, the old software settings and the old hardware won’t work. So we have taken offline any upgrade tools or software for Peek that points to the old settings.

The previous Peek *firmware* however does work. It’s just the configurations and some hardware aspects that have to be changed. So technically speaking if you don’t like the “Peek 9 firmware” or don’t have it, that is OK. You just need to get updated configurations and SIM card from us.

Peek 9 (version 1.50.02) Upgrade and how to get it

This process is pretty easy. Most people get through it in 20 minutes.

It is Peek 9 (version 1.50.02) .

Step 1 is fully charge your Peek. Step 2 is do a Reset Peek from Peek Manager / Device Info. Then Step 3…download:

Download Windows Installer tool for Peek software version 1.50.02 build 368 — October 29, 2010

For Advanced users, here is the Download Firmware Only for Version 1.50.02 build 368– October 29, 2010

Features of 1.50.02
- This is Peek 9
- Faster, easier, better in tons of ways
- Peek9.com has information
- .02 has some improvements to the UI graphics and Facebook/Twitter screens

Help and common questions with upgrading (updated)

Some easy troubleshooting tips.

I think I destroyed my Peek! It won’t turn on. This is pretty much impossible. The worst thing you can do is start upgrading without enough battery (or repeatedly try upgrading without charging) and have the charge run out mid-download of firmware. The Peek won’t start or acknowledge your attempt; and it won’t charge either. What you need to fix this is a charged battery. If you only have one Peek, you’re probably going to end up sending your Peek to us. Let us know and mail it to Peek, 419 Lafayette St, 2nd floor, NY NY 10003.

I did charge my battery, but I still think it’s dead! If your Peek won’t start, it probably failed mid-download of the firmware. The Upgrader tool for version 1.10.00 does two major steps: loads firmware (which is like downloading a program onto the hard drive), and updates settings (which is like checking some boxes and turning some knobs on that software).

If it failed to download the software, then it won’t seem to power on. It will likely light up the keys when it is plugged into your machine.

Do this: Pull out the battery, put it back in, and then restart the Upgrader. When it asks you to “power on” the Peek, pressing that button tells the Peek to do the one thing it can still do — accept a new download. It won’t seem anything is happening (your Peek won’t buzz or light up right away), but soon the Upgrader will start showing progress. When it finishes, pull out the battery, restart and now you have working software.

But I tried loading the firmware and it didn’t work. :( Simply retry. This sounds silly but the connection is sometimes unreliable. The Windows software, the data cable, etc can let you down. So just retry. Sometimes we have to retry 10 times on some Peeks!

I got the firmware and it boots. But it says “SIM error” or has a “Red X” or is acting weird in another way. This is because the update settings part failed. The advice is similar to the above: retry. But since you got the firmware loaded, you should make sure you charge up your Peek before retrying. If the installer doesn’t get it going after a few tries, you can force it to work manually. Take a look at this post from our customer support team. We have released a new version of the installer that removes this problem. Get it here

I’m not even getting that far. It doesn’t ever ever ever “see” my Peek. This is a data cable issue with Windows. The cable could be genuinely damaged — is anything loose? But 95% chance that the cable is just loose and needs to be jiggled, or Windows restarted, or worst case try another PC. We know that our Upgrader works well on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. (Sorry Mac and Unix folks.)

That’s it! If you are worried – just email us to feedback@getpeek.com and by all means read the boards! People are helpful there.

Peek Apps

Peek Apps are now an integrated part of your Peek’s account management — login to our Peek Manager online and you can link into the key apps. We are going to make them increasingly integrated, so you can actually control them/toggle them etc from the Manager. Hence the move.

Go to Peek Manager

Here is what it will look like when you get there:

Where do I get the upgrade data cable?

There are a few vendors of Peek’s upgrade data cables.

Newegg carries it (currently under $15 and under $5 shipping)

CDW has it

And PC Connection also carries it

Unbricking your Peek

This is kind of advanced. But it could save the day.

If you have attempted an upgrade per http://upgrade.getpeek.com and run into trouble, there is an advanced method you can try. Once you have downloaded the upgrader software, there are some other tools that get installed. See the video.

This process can take a Peek with bad firmware and revive it — they only thing you need is a battery with some charge and the data cable.

Hard Core Advanced Upgrade Tool Process from Amol Sarva peek on Vimeo.

Tracing your Peek’s output

This is pretty advanced

You can trace your Peek’s output and learn all kinds of stuff about what may be working incorrectly on your Peek if you are having trouble. It’s not for the faint of heart. But it will show you battery strength, network connection, etc etc.

And you can use the free Hyperterminal program that comes with Windows.

You just need a data cable.

Cutting edge software versions

This is pretty advanced

We put some dodgy stuff out there as we test new features.

Current test version is 1.50.04
- two line view
- single line to: field
- UI cleanups

You can find it US version 1.50.04 or read about it on various threads on the boards.

We also have libraries up for the European and Indian user communities

EU EU version 1.50.02

India India version 1.50.02

Peek Pronto Final – v1.09.20

This tip is no longer relevant. Peek Pronto Final has been retired.

Peek Pronto Final has been retired as a product. The software formerly available here will not work on your Peek.

For posterity, here is release version 1.09.20, known as Peek Pronto Final:

– removed —

This upgrader executable file is about 38 MB. It only runs on Windows. You need an upgrade cable for it (buy one at CDW). It works — this is the final version.

The single most important thing you can do before starting this process isfully charging your Peek. This is hugely important if you don’t have a second Peek around to save the day.

Features of 1.09.20
- Better contacts management and saving
- Better texting screens
- Better screen lock
- Speed improvements to the UI and data storage

I have a Peek from Spotnik or from Aircel. Can I download all these things?

If you are using Peek from Spotnik in Europe or from Aircel in India — you have to get firmware versions that are made for your device.

In general, on the US Peek site, you will find US software builds. These won’t work on your Peek.

We will keep all markets up to date with full version releases. But if you are eager to get one please email feedback@getpeek.com and we’ll see if we can get you something rough-and-ready though not quite launched in your market to play with.

Where do I get chargers or batteries?

If you need another charger or battery, visit http://boutique.getpeek.com and our partners at CDW will get you one quickly!

Help me with the 3Jam fixed number texting service

Some common questions we have received:

1. Can I change the number?

You can request one from 3Jam.

2. Can I change my email address?

You can do that in your account at 3jam.com

3. How do I log into my 3Jam account?

Go to www.3jam.com and click forgot password to get your login.

4. What is my number?

Send a text from your Peek to a phone, and it will show up.

5. What if someone texts my OLD number, the one I used before I got the fixed number?

It won’t work! You need to tell people you’ve changed over

6. Can people text me from another Peek?

Yes

7. Can people text me from Google Voice?

Yes

8. Can I text to a short code ?

No.

9. What about Twitter’s 40404?

Working on it – try it.

10. You don’t have my area code. What do I do?

It means we are out. You can wait a while, or just go for a nearby place.

11. Where do I get help from 3Jam?

Email them to support at 3jam dot com or visit their website at www.3jam.com for the latest.

12. What if I change my email address?

If you change your primary email address on your Peek – the email that is listed first in the list of Email Accounts in Peek Manager – you will break the link with 3Jam’s fixed number. You need to update 3Jam if you change this. Watch out when deleting email accounts from your Peek.

How do I re-activate my Peek?

If you have let your Peek account lapse, you can re-activate it easily.

Go to http://activate.getpeek.com if it has been a long while — if your account is officially inactive.

If it hasn’t been too long, you can probably use your primary Peek email account (the top one on your Peek’s Email Accounts screen) to log into http://account.getpeek.com

That way you can enter your payment details, choose your plan, and get going!

Here is the screen you’ll see when you log into your account. You can even choose a Lifetime or Annual plan from this screen.

Upgrading to the latest Peek software. How do I do it?

The latest version if Peek Pronto Final — software version 1.09.20.

We have a detailed post about it right here.

Microsoft Exchange 2010 or 2007, ActiveSync, WebDAV and Peek

Here is an overview on using Exchange with Peek. It’s pretty easy!

Microsoft Exchange is an email server that companies use around the world, but it comes in many, many variations and configurations.

We do our best to support it simply at Peek.

Your domain (examplecompany.com) needs to be set up in our system before you add the email account to your Peek.

We typically need four pieces of information to set up your domain. Your company’s IT folks will be able to give this to you, but you can sometimes find it in the “help” section of your webmail site.

Information needed:
Exchange webmail URL, e.g., https://webmail.examplecompany.com/exchange
Email address, e.g., myname@examplecompany.com
Username, e.g., EXAMPLECOMPANY/myname
And the version of Exchange you are running

You can send this information into our feedback@getpeek.com address or call us and tell us the information, and we’ll set up your domain and get back to you.

You can set it up yourself right now too:
Peek Exchange Settings Validator

Submit your settings above and we will automatically set up your domain. Then try adding the account to your Peek.

Peek uses several available methods for connecting to your Exchange server — ActiveSync, WebDAV, and IMAP. If the tool above doesn’t work, you can point your IT admin to the link below to get Exchange WebDAV set up properly to allow hosts like Peek to connect:

Here is a fully detailed walkthrough for your company’s IT folks

Some more tips from our friendly Geeky Peeks:

- If you see “CookieAuth.dll” in the URL of the Outlook Web Access login screen that means that the server has Internet Security and Acceleration Server which we don’t support – only applies to WebDAV, not ActiveSync.

- In general, a web page form based login is essential. If you’ve got a pop-up dialogue box that prompts for the username and password it may not work – Works 99% of the time now. I LOVE forms auth!

- Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) – this is the preferred method of accessing your MS Exchange email and the most common – AS should be preferred method, will be most reliable I think. Toss in IMAP with the POP3

- Secured by Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server if you see that on the OWA splash screen, thats a red flag for a firewall or IIS server being in place. Noticing some issues with it, mostly we get a HTTP 500 status error when trying to access the AS/OWA url, so we most likely need a different URL.

- The iPhone is really hard to get set up on Exchange. Here are their tips — sometimes this helps Peek users figure out what settings they need etc since there might be an iPhone user at the office that tried it before. http://blog.fosketts.net/guides/iphone-exchange-activesync/

I’m not getting a signal. Do I have coverage in my area?

If you are experiencing little to no signal bars on your Peek, it may be a coverage issue.  To check your coverage, click on the Data Coverage Tab and enter your address here. 3G and EDGE/GPRS purple areas indicate good coverage. Otherwise, Peek may not work in your area.

Why does “www.getpeek.com” show up on the bottom of texts?

There are 20 characters devoted to the ‘header’ of the message, which is basically the sender’s name. The ‘footer’ (www.getpeek.com) is always included in the first message of a ‘conversation’ to a mobile phone user (a ‘conversation’ is defined as an exchange between a peek user and mobile phone user, and lasts for 36 hours). In subsequent messages of the conversation between the same peek user and mobile user, the footer is only included if there’s room to include it – this persists for the length of the ‘conversation’. If the message is too big to fit into a single text message, the message will be split in two, and the footer will be included in both (since there’s room anyways). When the ‘conversation’ terminates, the rules regarding the first message are repeated, i.e. the footer will again be included on the first message.

What is the Peek for Life deal? Can existing Peeksters upgrade to Lifetime service?

You can now get a Peek Pronto with lifetime service for only $299, exclusively at Amazon!

Existing Peeksters can get a Lifetime upgrade for $249, with a prorated refund on their current plan. Just log into http://activate.getpeek.com and select Change Plan. You can choose a Lifetime plan right there.

Please note:  The service travels with the device only. However, service will still transfer if that device is 1) software-upgraded or 2) exchanged under the 1-Year Warranty. So you can transfer devices among people, but you can’t transfer the lifetime service to a new device.

    What is AskPeek?

What are the top 10 tips & tricks for Peek?

#1  Moving the cursor. Hold down the Shift key while moving the Scroll Wheel to move your cursor left and right while composing a message — a big help when it comes to typos.

#2  Top & Bottom. It’s a snap to move to the top or bottom of your inbox. Just press the letter T or B while in your Inbox screen. This also works on email messages in newer software versions.

#3  Downloading contacts. If you have a Hotmail, Gmail, AOL or Yahoo account, all you have to do is select “Contacts” from the menu and hit “Download Contacts.” Your email contacts will be downloaded instantly, so next time you’re composing an email and start typing a friend’s name, it will autofill for you.

#4  Text messaging. If you have a Peek Pronto, you can text message anyone by simply typing their 10-digit cell phone number in the “To:” field of an email message. Your friend can reply from their phone and you’ll receive the text reply on your Peek.

#5  Adding email accounts. You can connect up to 5 email addresses to Peek Pronto and 2 to Peek Classic. It’s simple, go to the menu and select Peek Manager –> Email Accounts –> Add account. Takes just a minute.

#6  Re-adding the email account to avoid old mail. If your Peek has been turned off for awhile (like between trips, or just on a long flight) and you don’t want it to download a ton of old email, you can remove and re-add your Email Account. Go to Peek Manager –> Email Accounts –> delete the account and then re-add it. This will clean the slate and you’ll only get new mails going forward.

#7  AskPeek Services. Free email information service from Peek. Just type your zip or city & state in the subject line of an email and send it to one of AskPeek’s addresses: weather@askpeek.com, traffic@askpeek.com, news@askpeek.com, maps@askpeek.com. You’ll get an email back instantly with the info you want!

#8  Pronto Upgrade. Want to support more email accounts and have unlimited text? Check your SW Version and either give us a call at 1-877-677-7335 to get the upgrade or get an upgrade cable and do it yourself – it’s fast and easy.

#9  Annual Savings Plan. If saving money is a priority, you can pay $180 up-front for an entire year of unlimited email & texting. That equals to just $15 a month! Call 877-677-7335 to arrange this.

#10  When in doubt, Power Cycle. Just like rebooting a computer, turning your Peek off, then on again is sometimes the easiest way to regain a lost signal or snap out of a receiving delay. If you ever get really stuck, just call us at 877-677-7335 for help, email care@getpeek.com or search the discussion boards.

    Happy Peeking!

Will my Peek work with Microsoft Exchange?

Yes – In general we can access your MS Exchange based email. You’ll need a Peek Pronto and the Peek servers must be able to access the MS Exchange server via the public internet.  If you use a VPN or use a Security ID key/dongle you’ll need to discuss options with your IT administrators to have your email forwarded to a publicly available account like GMail/Hotmail/AOL or Yahoo!

We can access your MS Exchange based emails in four ways:

    1) Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) – this is the preferred method of accessing your MS Exchange email and the most common

    2) Outlook Web Access (OWA) – Via WebDAV or ActiveSync we can connect to your Outlook Web Access interface. We can access your email using OWA however it has a few restrictions:

    • • We support MS Exchange server version 2003 and 2007
    • • If you see “CookieAuth.dll” in the URL of the Outlook Web Access login screen that means that the server has Internet Security and Acceleration Server which we don’t support
    • • In general, only authorized signed SSL certificates will be supported.  If the Exchange server doesn’t use SSL that’s OK too
    • • If you’re lucky enough to have a snazzy custom Outlook Web Access login screen for your Exchange server, we might not be able to collect your email
    • • In general, a web page form based login is essential. If you’ve got a pop-up dialogue box that prompts for the username and password it may not work

    3) POP3 – we can access MS Exchange servers over POP3

If you have more questions email feedback@getpeek.com or call us at 1-877-677-7335.  We’d love to hear from you.

I have a red-x and can’t add my email address!

If you have a red-x just click here to Activate your Peek. It only takes a few minutes to complete and you’ll be good to go. Of course, you can always call us at 1-877-677-7335. We’re happy to help.

How do I even navigate this thing?

Peek uses a scroll wheel as its primary means of navigation. The scroll wheel on the right hand side allows you to scroll up and down through folders and menus. Pressing in the scroll wheel brings up the menu and also behaves like an Enter key. The button below the scroll wheel is the Back button. Use the Back button to go back to the previous screen or menu.

What are the dimensions of the device?

Peek is about 4 inches by 2.7 inches and weighs 109 grams. It is only 0.42 inches thick—the thinnest handheld mobile device out there!

Wait! Is there really no contract? What’s the catch?

Yep. Is it really hard to believe? No contract, no catch, no bill from Peek. We just believe in making things easy for Peeksters. If our service is no longer a good fit for you, then you should feel free to stop service—believe us, we on the Peek Team have all been ‘caught’ by two-year contracts so we thought it’d be cool to avoid that mess.

    Where can I buy Peek?

We currently sell Peeks on this website, as well as through Amazon, Dell.com and Costco.com. We also carry them in select Blockbusters and PCS Wireless stores. Check out our store locater at http://www.getpeek.com/findretailer.htm.

How do I know if I’m buying a Peek with the latest software version?

If you want to buy a Peek with the latest software, your best bet is to buy it off of our website, getpeek.com, or off Amazon.com under Peek Pronto. If you’re buying from other places like Target or Costco, then you may get a Classic with older software—no way to tell until you get it!

I love Peek, using it, spreading the word! How can I get involved with the Peekster Community?

We’re flattered that you’re so excited about Peek! A lot of our Super Peeksters have taken to moderating our Boards, inviting other Peeksters to their homes for free software updates and have even created other sites. Here’s a short list of our Peek Community sites:

    What is Peek Pronto?

Peek Pronto is in the history books. This award winning gadget is now a piece of the past — Peek Prontos are discontinued and if you have one, you need to get yourself upgraded to Peek 9. See faq.getpeek.com support

Peek Pronto is Peek’s flagship handheld messaging device, offering unlimited email and texting for a monthly rate as low as $14.99. The key features of Peek Pronto are:
    • Push email–super-fast email delivery to your Peek (0-5 minutes depending on your email provider)
    • Unlimited email and texting
    • All bold font option for improved readability
    • Ability to register up to 5 email accounts on your Peek
    • Compatibility with most Microsoft Exchange accounts
    • Ability to view images, PDF & DOC attachments
    • Email and contact search functionality
    • Auto-correct

    What is Peek monthly service?

Peek provides you with the most straightforward mobile email experience around, all for as low as $14.99/month. No hidden fees, no gimmicks. Month-to-month service is $19.95 but if you’re looking for additional ways to save, sign up for the quarterly plan which costs just $16.67/month or even better the yearly plan which is $14.99/month. Just email or call Care and they’ll get you set up.

My Peek won’t turn on. What should I do?

If your Peek no longer turns on, don’t panic! Follow these simple steps and your Peek should be back up and running in no time.

    1. First open the rear battery door and check that the battery is correctly and firmly in place and not at all loose.

    2. Next check that your battery is well charged. Plug in your AC charger and give it a few minutes of juice just to be sure.

    3. If you still don’t see the battery charging animation appear, try removing and replacing your battery while your Peek is still plugged into the AC charger. Don’t worry – this is 100% safe. Give it a few more minutes to acquire some charge.

    4. Next try pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds.

If you’ve tried these options without any luck, please give us a call at 1-877-677-PEEK (7335) and we’ll be happy to help you troubleshoot.

How quickly will I receive emails on my Peek?

With the Peek Pronto, Gmail is just about instant if you have enabled IMAP. Hotmail, Live, and MSN will be the same in late June and AOL in July. Yahoo! will follow shortly thereafter. Email from accounts that aren’t instant (POP3, ISPs like Comcast and Verizon) should arrive every few minutes.

With Peek classics the time can vary from 5 to 10 minutes and older versions of Peek between 5 and 15 minutes.

Can I send text messages on my Peek?

Yes! You can send text messages (also known as SMS messages) by following a few easy steps. Peek makes it as easy as sending an email, and there are NO extra charges!

    1. Compose a new email.
    2. Enter the 10 digit phone number you’d like to message in the ‘To’ field (instead of an email address).
    3. Finish writing your message. Make sure you keep it brief since text messages are generally limited to 160 characters by text message carriers.
    4. Send.
We’ll convert your email to a cell phone-friendly text message and take care of the rest.

I have more than one email address. Can I access them all on my Peek?

Yes! If you bought a Peek Classic, then you can add up to two (2) email accounts. But if you bought Peek Pronto (or made the smart move of jazzing up your old Peek!), then you can have up to five (5) email accounts!

Adding a second, third, fourth or even fifth account is easy – just follow these simple steps:

    1. Select the ‘Peek Manager’ item from your Peek’s main menu
    2. Select ‘Email Accounts’ from the list of options
    3. Select ‘Add Account’ from the menu
    4. In the ‘Add Account’ screen, remember to fill out all fields. Then select ‘Save Account’ from the menu
    5. Once your new account settings are validated, you should receive a popup confirming successful set up

Keep in mind that you won’t be able to add another account if you already have 3 accounts registered.

    Are there different font sizes?

Peeks with software version 1.09 or later have a bold font option that makes emails very easy to read!

    How does the billing work?

Once you register your credit card, we’ll just keep charging for the monthly/quarterly/annual service fee—no need to do anything! Of course, with Lifetime Service, there will be no further charges after the one-time payment. If you should decide to cancel, just call us and we’ll deactivate it right away.

But I want to do more! Can I do things like test future software versions? I’m a really great tester.. bug finding is my passion!

Yes indeed you can. We post test versions on the boards.getpeek.com and you can probably connect with like-minded folks there.

Does Peek Pronto have new hardware?

No. Despite reports to the contrary, Peek Pronto is solely a major new software release.

Can I upgrade to Peek Pronto features?

If you have a Peek Classic or a Peek you bought in 2008 sometimes, you may be interested in the features of Peek Pronto — including texting and faster mail delivery.

The cost to upgrade and how to upgrade depend on what software version you have.  To find out your software version, just go to Peek Manager > Device Info > SW Version.

    If you have SW 1.04, 1.06, 1.07, or 1.08:

Get an upgrade cable at CDW or New Egg or other resellers and upgrade to the latest software version at home, or send us an email to care at getpeek dot com and we’ll help you.

If you have SW 1.09 (or later), or get yourself upgraded to that version:

Log into your account on http://account.getpeek.com and you can see what type of Peek features you have. If you have a Peek Classic, you can call us to have us push out the change over the air that makes this a Peek Pronto. Email us or you can call 877 677 7335 (PEEK). We charge you the difference in price between Classic and Pronto — $40.

How can I buy replacement parts for my Peek?

You may purchase replacement parts like batteries and chargers through resellers such as CDW: http://www.cdw.com/shop/search/results.aspx?key=peek&searchscope=All&sr=1&Find+it.x=0&Find+it.y=0. You can even buy car chargers and Peek cases.  Check it out!

When I’m writing an email, how can I fix typos without having to delete everything I’ve written?

Try holding down the Shift Key on your Peek keypad while rolling the Scroll Wheel up and down. This will move your cursor left and right, instead of up and down.

Can I receive text messages on my Peek?

Yes. Your friends will notice that texts from a Peek show up as sent from either a 10-digit number or your email address.  All they have to do is hit “reply” on their phone and their text will be sent straight to your Peek.  In case you’re wondering, even though the 10-digit number looks like a phone number it isn’t your Peek’s permanent number.  Each phone you text from your Peek will show as being sent from a different number.  But once your friend receives a text from you, they should be able to save that number and text you whenever they want.

    How do I view attachments?

Peek Classic currently supports displaying image attachments that are .jpg, .png, .gif and .bmp.

Peek Pronto supports viewing images, PDF, and Word docs.
To view an attachment on your Peek, just select “View attachment” from the menu while you are reading an email.

Even if an attachment can’t be viewed on your Peek, all attachments will be preserved when forwarding email.

To view attachments on your Peek, simply do the following:
-Open the email with the attachments you would like to view.
-Open the menu, select “View attachments” option
-Scroll over particular attachments and select “View attachment”

I’ve got more than one email address set up on my Peek. Does each email account have its own Inbox?

No. To make your mobile email experience as simple as possible, your Peek displays all of your emails on the same screen. Once you open an email, you will be able to tell which email address it corresponds to by the ‘To’ field. And when you reply or forward an email, it’s automatically set up to be sent ‘From’ the correct account.

Are there any other billing options besides the standard monthly plan?

Yes! We have quarterly, yearly, and lifetime plans—perfect for gifts as well as savings for yourself. With these plans, you will only be billed every three months or every year, or never again—and save money while you’re at it. Just give us a call at 877-677-PEEK (7335) to change plans.

    -1 Month: $19.95

    -3 Months: $49.95 ($16.67/month, $10 savings)

    -12 Months: $179.95 ($15.00/month, $60 savings)

    -Lifetime: $249.95

I placed an order online and haven’t received my Peek yet. How can I check the status of my order?

You can check the status of your online order any time at www.getpeek.com. Just click on ‘Check Order,’ then enter your email address and order number. If you’re having trouble or can’t find your order number, just give us a call at 1-877-677-PEEK (7335) and we’d be happy to help.

Does my Peek have a 10-digit number that I can give out to my friends?

That’s a tricky one. Your Peek doesn’t have a single 10-digit phone number that you can give to your friends, but when you text a friend from your Peek, they will see it being sent from a 10-digit number. Each time you send that friend a text, it should show as being sent from the same number. Your friend can reply to your text and you’ll get the reply on your Peek. Your friend can also save that number and send you a text later on.

But if you send a text to another friend from your Peek, they may see a different 10-digit number when they receive your text. But they can also reply to and save that number and all messages will make it back to your Peek.

Currently, the only known limitation to the above is if a single phone receives texts from more than 25 different Peeks, but this should be pretty infrequent.

Does my Peek have a contact book? Can I import contacts from my webmail accounts?

Yes. We support downloading contacts from Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, and AOL accounts. HOWEVER your contacts list will actually build itself as you send emails with your Peek. Whenever you send a mail – whether it’s a new mail or a reply – your recipients will be automatically saved in your Contacts list. So after just a few days of usage, you should be pretty close to a fully comprehensive list!

    When does billing start?

If you buy service prior to activating on your Peek, we will charge for that plan. But, depending on your plan, the recurring billing cycle doesn’t start until one, three or twelve months after your email is actually activated on your Peek.

My device hasn’t received anything in a long time! It looks like there’s reception. What’s wrong?

Your Peek may have lost its connection with our servers. To cure this, please do the following steps:

    1. Take the battery out of your Peek, wait 5 seconds… put it back in, turn it on and see what happens.
    2. If you’re still not receiving, make sure that you haven’t recently changed the password of your email account. If so, you’ll need to update your password on your Peek too. Just go to Peek Manager > Email accounts > Edit account. Re-enter your password and Save.
    3. If neither solution above works, give us a call at 877-677-PEEK (7335) and one of our Tech Support specialists will be able to help you out.

    What is Peek Classic?

Peek Classic is in the record books now. This award winning gadget is now part of Peek’s illustrious past — Peek Classics are discontinued and if you have one, you need to get yourself upgraded to Peek 9. See faq.getpeek.com support

Peek Classic is Peek’s original email-only handheld device. Peek Classic keeps things simple, with support for up to 2 accounts as well as the ability to view image attachments.  Peek Classic also has the bold font option and auto-correct features.  The monthly rate for Peek Classic is also as low $14.99.  Emails delivered to Peek Classic will arrive in 5-15 minutes depending on your email provider.

    I have software version 1.04, 1.06, 1.07, 1.08, 1.09.15 or 1.09.18—how do I upgrade?

We have released a new upgrader tool and written up some notes for how to stay current. The details are here.

Everyone is eligible to update to the latest Peek software.

The latest version is Peek Pronto Final (software version 1.10.00, released July 18, 2010). If you bought a Peek Pronto in a store during 2009, you probably have 1.09.18 or 1.09.15 — so it’s time to upgrade.

How is Peek Pronto Final better? It’s more stable and reliable, it’s faster even when you get tons of mail, it has a better screen lock feature, and it’s got nicer support for texting.

There are 3 ways to upgrade:

    1. Find a friendly Peekster near you who is willing to upgrade your Peek.  Post on our Peekster community boards , to see if there’s a Peekster nearby.

    2. If you are comfortable with computers and consider yourself a techie — or if you know someone willing to help you out for 30 minutes, order an upgrade cable from CDW or Newegg (better rates on shipping) and get the upgrade software for Peek version 1.10.00.

You plug the cable in and run the upgrade software. If you have trouble, try unplugging the cables and starting over. Or just try running the software again. Windows is a little funny in its support for the upgrade cable, but a few retries work.

If you are really getting nowhere, you could try a different computer. Or you can try installing the cable’s drivers directly; here are the versions for recent Windows operating systems: Windows XP,Windows Vista, or Windows 7.

The upgrade tool only works on Windows PCs at this time (sorry Mac/Linux users). If you are having trouble with the updater, check out this Peek board topic with some great tips to help get you started.

Since this is a process that takes about 30 minutes, and since our care reps on the phone are not PC experts, we can’t talk you through this on the care hotline. We can however get you help on the boards or via email. Thousands of people have done it an succeeded — so the boards probably include your situation and its solution already.

Archived, here is the upgrade software for Peek version 1.09.20 (in case you want to roll back). Note about the installer wizard for 1.09.20: there is a typo in one of the screens that says .18 – it’s only a typo. You are installing .20.

    3. Only for folks who have a Peek Classic, which is software version “1.09 Classic”, upgrading to Peek Pronto costs $40. You can still upgrade the software per the above steps, but you’ll continue to be using it Classic mode (no texting, slower mail delivery, but you get the software improvements).

You can purchase the upgrade by calling us at 1-877-677-7335.  You’ll need your IMEI, but you will not need to send in your Peek or reload any software simply to go from 1.09 Classic to 1.09 Pronto.

In the past, our busy bee Peeksters here at headquarters have upgraded Peeks for customers by hand. We have had folks mail them into New York or San Francisco, and upgraded them. Then mailed them back. We are not doing this right now — we highly encourage you to do option 2 above. It’s kind of tricky — like setting up a new printer — but you don’t have to be without your Peek and no pesky mail problems. (April 2010)

How can I pay for my Peek monthly service?

Setting up your Peek account for monthly service is easy. You can do it in any of the following ways:

    1. Online at www.getpeek.com. Select ‘My Account’ and login with your registered email address and PIN. If it’s your first time logging in, you’ll be able to register your credit card right away. If you’ve logged in previously, just click the ‘Manage Credit Card’ link under ‘My Account.’

    2. With our dedicated Peek Customer Care team. Give us a call at 877-677-PEEK and we’ll be happy to get you registered.

    3. On your Peek device itself! Access the ‘Peek Manager’ menu item and select ‘Peek Registration.’ Enter your Credit Card info in the fields provided and select ‘Submit.’ We’ll securely validate all account information wirelessly while you stay on the go.

How can I delete more than one email at a time?

While in your Inbox or another email folder (like Saved), hold down the Shift Key on your Peek keypad while rolling the Scroll Wheel up and down. This will highlight multiple emails at the same time and allow you to delete, move, or mark as (un)read all of them at once!

Can I send a text to more than one person simultaneously?

No problem! Since Peek handles text messages by converting to and from emails, you have all the same options for sending texts. Just make sure your recipients – email addresses, phone numbers or both – are separated by a semicolon and they should all receive your message at once!

Some of my emails don’t show up on my Peek, but I can see them in my Inbox online. What gives?

This may happen when email you receive is automatically marked as spam. Since we try to keep your Peek Inbox uncluttered, your Peek won’t receive anything marked as spam. If you’d like to remove this filter, turn off spam filtering for your email account.

Another common reason emails are not delivered to your Peek is if you also use another third-party client like Outlook or Thunderbird to read emails. If you do, make sure that you’ve chosen to “Leave a copy of mail on server” in your third-party client.

If you have trouble finding your account’s spam settings or if you’re still missing email on your Peek, please call us at 877-677-PEEK and we’ll be happy to help you out.

Who pays for shipping (inbound and outbound)?

You pay to ship your Peek to our offices and we’ll pay for shipping back to you. We’ll use USPS Priority Mail to ship your Peek back. We recommend shipping just your Peek (no charger or packaging) in a small padded envelope or a standard FedEx or USPS envelope. If you send via Priority Mail it should cost less than $5.

What are the different credit cards accepted for payment?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover Card.

My device isn’t receiving OR sending emails.

First things first…turn your Peek off/on, in most cases you’ll start getting emails again. If you have to do this a lot, call/email Care.

    2. If that doesn’t fix it, compose yourself a new email from the account you cannot receive on. Send it to that account as well.
2a. Check your sent folder, if the message is in Italics…it has not left your Peek. Try turning your Peek off/on.
2b. If the message is in Bold, check your computers Inbox and see if the message is there.
2c. If the message is there, wait 4-5 minutes…and it should come to your Peek, if it doesn’t or doesn’t even show up there…call/email Care!

I already have a Peek and can currently text and register 3 email accounts. With the launch of Peek Pronto does this mean I won’t be able to text anymore and I have to eliminate an email account?

No.  If you purchased an older model Peek that lets you to text and have 3 email accounts, you’ll always be able keep doing so. But we recommend that you upgrade to Peek Pronto—it’s fast and easy (see Upgrading for details)!

Is my email address supported by Peek?

Peek supports most popular email providers, including Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and AOL. Here’s a list of some of the other more popular address types we’re compatible with:

    • Comcast®
    • MSN
    • SBCGlobal
    • AT&T™
    • Verizon
    • Roadrunner™
    • BellSouth®
    • Earthlink®
    • Cox®
    • Charter®
    • Cablevision®
    • Mac®
    • Optonline®
    • Juno®
    • Netzero®
    • and many others…

They are few and far between, but there are some email domains that we cannot support at this time, such as Novell Groupwise and Lotus Notes. Some providers only allow checking email on a mobile device like the Peek if you pay for premium membership, such as PeoplePC®.

If you’d like a new mypeekmail.com account to use with your Peek, just call us at 877-677-PEEK and we’ll get you going!

Which credit cards are accepted by Peek?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover Card.

Is there a quicker way to open my email than by using the Menu?

Yes! You can use the Enter Key and Delete Key to open and delete emails, respectively, without opening the Menu.

Why is my friend not getting my text messages?

Make sure that you don’t put a leading ‘1′ in front of the 10 digit phone number, and that the number doesn’t contain any sort of punctuation like dashes, etc. Here are some examples:

    Correct: 9175558273

    Incorrect: 19175558273

    Incorrect: (917) 555 8273

    Incorrect: 917-555-8273

If you still aren’t able to send and/or receive text messages, it may be an issue with the network carrier of the phone you are messaging. Nevertheless, please give us a call at 877-677-PEEK and we’ll see what we can do to help!

Is there a limit to the size of emails I receive on my Peek?

Yes, we impose a 12k character limit on the size of emails that can be viewed on your Peek. Although it’s a pretty high number, you might find that you reach it for those emails that are abnormally large. These emails are best viewed on your computer.

There is also a 4k character limit for emails sent from your Peek.
We also impose a limit of 10MB on the size of attachments (2MB if attachments are received using MSP) that can be received and forwarded by your Peek. If a single email contains attachments that exceed this limit, all attachments beyond the limit will not be visible on your Peek.

How do I cancel Peek service?

You may cancel your subscription to Peek at any time, and cancellation will be effective immediately.

Because we provide significant savings built into our price plans, we cannot provide partial refunds once a service period has started.

If you have purchased a multi-month plan (e.g. quarterly or annual plan) and cancel within 30 days, you will be refunded the difference of price paid and $19.95. After 30 days, we can’t refund the plan.

To cancel, you can call Customer Care at 877-677-PEEK (7335). You can also email us. In either case you need your PIN from getpeek.com to authenticate yourself to make account changes.

What if I’m in the US a couple months a year? Can I use Peek?

Yes, definitely! Peek has no contract so merely just reactivate your device when you’re back in the States. And deactivate when you’re not. And so on…

How can I avoid those annoying bills and late payment fees?

Since your Peek monthly service fee is charged to your credit card on-file, you’ll never have to worry about bills, late fees or penalties. Just make sure your credit card has enough funds and has not passed its expiration date!

Another option is to get the Lifetime Plan and never have to worry about paying again! We offer the Lifetime Peek Pronto on Amazon.com for $299, and existing Peeksters can get a Lifetime upgrade for $249, with a prorated refund on their current plan. Just call Customer Care at 1-877-677-PEEK to get the upgrade.

How can I wipe ALL personal data from my Peek?

To remove all personal information from your Peek you can perform a device reset, which returns your Peek to its out-of-the-box state. Follow these steps to reset:

    1. Access the ‘Peek Manager’ menu item and select ‘Device Info.’

    2. Select ‘Reset Peek’ from the options listed, and follow the prompts given.

Is there a way to jump to the top or bottom of my Inbox?

Yes – use the ‘T’ and ‘B’ Keys on your Peek keypad to jump to the top and bottom of your Inbox, respectively.

Are there any limitations or tips?

At this time we don’t support sending text messages to international phones or to five digit phone numbers (also known as ‘short codes’). But we are always looking to improve our service and promise to continue to work on giving you the best email and messaging experience possible. In the meantime, check out some of the cool ways you can use your peek here.

If I read or delete an email from my Peek, will it sync with my online account and vice versa?

Currently Peek does not support two-way syncing, but this is something we’re working on.

Is there synching between Peek and my webmail/Outlook?

No. Reading or deleting your emails on your Peek will not sync with your webmail account. We know that some of you prefer synching so we are considering offering that option sometime in the future! Keep the feedback coming to feedback@getpeek.com!

What if I’m abroad for a couple months? Can I stop service and restart when I get back?

Yes, we’d be happy to make that happen! Just call in and we’ll manually suspend your account for up to 90 days. After the 90th day, it will be automatically reactivated. You can call in to re-suspend your account for another 90 days, and so on…

Which phone services can I text to?

When I try to register, I get an error “Invalid Username/Password Combination.”

At Peek Care, we call this problem IUPC. Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

    1. Try it again, we all don’t type perfectly sometimes.
    2. Try it again, 3rd times the charm!
    3. Login to whatever website you normally go to check your email, and try there.
3a. If you were able to login, call/email Care.
3b. If you couldn’t login, I think we both know what the problem is.

Can I pay extra and get phone service? What about music? Or web-browsing?

My Gmail on my Peek is having problems!

Anytime you have a problem with Gmail, whether you cannot send/receive, or you get IUPC…login to Gmail > Mail Settings > enable POP3 access for all mail, and enable IMAP. Also, make sure that you have Gmail leaving a copy of the message on the server.

My email address has an obscure or little-known domain. Can Peek work for me?

Yes, it definitely can. When activating your Peek, just submit your existing email address and password and we’ll try to guess your POP3 settings automatically. If you have any trouble, just call us at 877-677-PEEK and we’ll help you set it up. If you have a corporate mail account or some other type we don’t currently support, you can have your work e-mail forwarded to a free web email account like gmail, which will not cause you any noticeable delays. Just make sure it’s ok with your company IT guy!

Does Peek support HTML and rich text emails?

Peek reformats HTML and rich text emails into plain text so that they’re easy to read on the go.

Once signed out, sign back in and look for any messages about Hotmail “improvements”. If you do, check the box to “Do not display this again” and continue. Once at your Inbox, look for Mail Options > Reading Pane Settings. Turn that off, and give the Peek another whirl.
